An awareness of the ways in which language can Threshold concepts, Meyer and Land claim, are troublesome in the sense that they are difficult for students to understand. Perkins defines troublesome knowledge “as that which appears counter-intuitive, alien (emanating from another culture or discourse), or incoherent.” (quoted in Meyer and Land, pp. 5-6) They are not easily or automatically understood when first encountered. The Threshold Concept Framework has grown significantly since this web site was first created and this bibliography, though found useful by many lecturers, teachers and researchers familiar with the threshold concept, is now so large as to be less helpful than it originally was for anyone, new to the concept, wishing to incorporate the framework into either their teaching or research. Threshold concepts are, therefore, a useful way to organise a curriculum as they provide students with a disciplined way of thinking about content. By relating new content to the threshold concept eventually changes ones pattern of thinking. 2014-06-01 · This is my first attempt to define Threshold Concepts in English which may prove useful in diagnosing where students are becoming stuck.

Glynis Cousins (2006) offers an attractive point of view: “[a} focus on threshold concepts enables teachers to make refined decisions about what is fundamental to a grasp of the subject they are teaching. It is a “less is more” approach to curriculum design.” 2016-10-23 · Threshold concepts come out of higher ed academia, and it’s admittedly a bit esoteric in the literature, but I think it’s a useful lens with practical implications. Threshold concepts are very much related to Wiggins and McTighe’s “big ideas,” but with a few interesting twists.

A threshold concept can be considered as akin to a portal, opening up a new and previously inaccessible way of thinking about something. It represents a transformed way of understanding, or interpreting, or viewing something without which the learner cannot progress. “A threshold concept is discipline-specific, focuses on understanding of the subject and … has the ability to transform learners’ views of the content.” (Zepke, p. 98) It’s not the same as a core concept, although that’s a useful place to first put the idea. Threshold Concepts The reason why subjects have endured so long in formal schooling is that they are groups of knowledge bound together by a set of big ideas. For example, in geography one such big idea is that environments are created and changed by physical processes. Jan Meyer and Ray Land call these big ideas Threshold Concepts.
